Aug 8, 2026 10:15 am Greater West Bench and Red Wing are not currently under an Evacuation Order or Alert but that can change fast – the Bald Range wildfire continues to aggressively grow and remains out of control.

If you have not already done so, prep your home, gather your family, check in with neighbours who might need a hand - especially anyone elderly, living alone, or without a way to get updates themselves.

A few things worth doing right now:

  • Visit Getting Ready for a Wildfire

  • Clear dry leaves, needles and debris from your roof, gutters and around your foundation.  Put flammable items away (cushions, door mats, etc.)

  • Put together a go-bag: ID, medications, chargers, important documents, a change of clothes, toiletries, first aid kit, mask, etc.

  • Put together a few days of food and water.

  • Pack your car, fill your gas tank, park your car so you can easily exit your driveway.

  • Know your family's plan - where to meet, how to reach each other if phones are down

  • Have a plan for pets and livestock.  In the evening, put all your pets in one room so they are easy to collect if you need to leave.

  • Visit the RDOS YouTube website, Erick (RDOS Communication Manager) is on there as much as he can be with updates.

Looking to help those evacuated?

  • Cash donations go further than physical goods right now – donate via Community Foundation https://www.cfso.net/

  • Evacuee reception centres are set up for housing and registration, not sorting donations. If you have items to give, local thrift stores are the better drop-off point.

This is a lot to carry, even from a distance. If you need to talk to someone, the BC Mental Health Support Line is free and available 24/7: 310-6789 (no area code needed). For crisis or suicidal thoughts, call or text 988.

Take care of yourself and each other.

Bald Ridge Wildfire

It has been one week since the Bald Ridge Wildfire began. Greater West Bench is in day six of being on evacuation alert, and it is common to feel a bit of fatigue or skepticism at this point. However,
